The Great Lawn at the Aurora Municipal Center (AMC) is being transformed into a landscape that is more water efficient as part of the ongoing commitment of the city to sustainable park management and water conservation.
The project is being done by the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department of the city partnering with Elite Industries. The existing Kentucky bluegrass turf of the Great Lawn is being replaced with Bermudagrass which is resistant to droughts.
A large amount of water is needed to maintain large areas of Kentucky bluegrass. Transitioning suitable areas to landscaping that is more resistant to drought is among the many measures the city is implementing to carefully manage an essential community resource. Bermudagrass will be better suited to the climate in Colorado and is a more water-efficient alternative.
Local Print shops often assist in spreading the word about such improvements to the community using Flyers.
The project is part of the Back to Our Roots initiative of the Parks Department. This is an effort over the long term to reduce the consumption of water by replacing turf that requires a great deal of water with turf that is more sustainable and tolerant to drought.
This project is expected to continue throughout the rest of this month and reopen for use by the public in October.
