School focused on arts to be established in Aurora

A magnet school focused on the arts in Aurora will be called the Charles Burrell Visual and Performing Arts Campus. It will be named after Charles Burrell, the first African-American musician to be part of a major symphony orchestra.

Work is currently underway on a program that will provide opportunities for students who are passionate about the arts. Aurora Central High teacher Mehran Ahmed will be supervising the program for high school students while Shawn Graziani will run the program for grades kindergarten through eight. More information about such programs can be made available to the community with brochure printing.

Graziana said the focus of the program will be on those students who may fall behind in class because they are otherwise occupied with drawing or other artistic endeavors. He said the program will enable such students who have the passion and interest to develop their skills. Ahmed believes in enabling students to participate in the development of the program and in creating less of a divide between those students who are in traditional programs and those who are focused on the arts.

The former Peoria Elementary School will be the home for the new arts magnet program and will enroll students in grades kindergarten through eight. The high school will remain as a traditional neighborhood school but will also enroll students looking for more integration of the arts in their education.
