New superintendent named for Aurora school district

Michael Giles has been selected as the new superintendent for the Aurora Public Schools (APS).

School board president, Debbie Gerkin, said that Giles has the leadership traits, skills, competencies, and knowledge the have been identified by the community as priorities. Gerkin also expressed her thanks to staff in the district, members of the community, and board members for finding the ideal person for the position.

Giles, who can now update his Business Cards to reflect his new position, said he has lived in Aurora for the last 25 years and is highly engaged in the community, so he is excited about being able to lead the community and its students forward in this role. He added that there is a lot of talent, brilliance, and opportunity within the community.

Giles grew up in New York City and as a child lived in several communities as his father was in the military. When he was in high school his family moved to Colorado. He has worked for the Cherry Creek School District as a counselor at the Falcon Creek Middle School and joined its administration in 2014, having previously never imagined himself to be an administrator. Over the years since, has been assistant superintendent of performance and of diversity, equity, culture, and community engagement.

Giles starts his position on Saturday, July 1.
