New mental health center for children opens in Aurora

The first outpatient facility designed for children with mental needs too complex for therapy alone has been opened by the Medical Center of Aurora.

Local Print shops often help with informing the community about such new facilities by producing Flyers and Booklets about their services.

The center is unique in the region and has a small team of social workers, counselors, behavioral analysts, and therapists. It has an intensive outpatient program which is designed to treat 40 children between the ages of 9 and 17. These children face a range of mental health issues that include difficulty with regulating feelings, self-injury, anxiety, and depression.

Stephanie Camacho, Director of Outpatient Services, said this type of intensive outpatient care is for children who can still function in class but find it challenging to act within the social norms of school and struggle to follow rules. Camacho said it is often these children who are expelled from class.

Those who participate in the programs at the facility will attend a minimum of three sessions per week. The sessions employ a variety of therapies, from individual counseling interventions to group-based models. Camacho said the focus is on interacting in groups by working on social and communications skills, along with other related skills, and the group setting is the main focus of treatment.
