New interim deputy police chief appointed in Aurora

Heather Morris has been named interim deputy police chief of the Aurora Police Department by Interim Police Chief Art Acevedo.

Announcements of such appointments are often made known throughout a community with poster printing.

Morris and Acevedo worked for the Houston Police Department at the same time, before Morris retired from the Department in 2021. She has 22 years of experience in field training, patrol, investigations in internal and criminal affairs, and DUI enforcement.

The responsibilities of the deputy chief include planning, communication, interagency coordination, and training. She may also need to act as chief in the event of the absence of the chief.

Acevedo said that Morris is a seasoned executive of the police and has a record of excellence throughout her over 20 years of service. He added that she has a great deal of energy, and is highly ethical and committed to organizational excellence, as he has witnessed first-hand the positive impact she has had on those she has led.

Morris said she feels it is important to work with people in the community and be their true representative in serving them, regardless of her title. She added that she is looking forward to coming to Aurora and helping to move the department forward.

Morris was sworn in as interim deputy chief on Monday, April 3.
