The new chief of Aurora Fire Rescue (AFR) will be Alec Oughton, replacing Alan Robnett, who has been serving as interim chief since chief Fernando Gray stepped down in July.
Residents of a community are often informed about such appointments through poster printing.
Oughton has been the leader of the Division of Fire of Henrico County in Virginia for the past 24 years. That agency is about the same size as the one in Aurora. During his time in Virginia, he worked in emergency medical services and firefighting.
Oughton said that he rode through the area during a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research in 2007, and fell in love with the area’s beauty and people. He added that he is looking forward to connecting with and caring for the residents of Aurora and its firefighters. He will welcome input from members of the community, as well as rank-and-file firefighters, into the operations of the agency. He also plans to spend a lot of his time engaging with partners and the public on behalf of AFR.
Jim Twombly, City Manager, said that of the four finalists for the position, he was particularly impressed with Oughton’s engagement with him, members of the City Council, and members of the community, finding it to be genuine and authentic.
Oughton will begin his position at AFR on Monday, March 13.
