The Anschutz Medical Campus of Colorado University (CU) in Aurora has announced the hiring of a founding director of the Office for Disability.
Lisa M. Meeks, PhD, MA, will work across the entire campus such that CU Anschutz will be the first health science campus in the country to align diversity, equity, and inclusion in its organizational structure. Meeks plans to continue her research on diversity, equity, and inclusion, as she will also be an associate professor of psychiatry in the School of Medicine. Her research interest is in how accessibility affects performance and the impact of accommodations on student success.
She will develop a new policy and research program to be called SUMMIT, which will span across the Central Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Engagement and the Office for Student Affairs. It will be designed to increase disability inclusion in the education of health professionals, and serve as a model. Meeks said that the program will serve to inform policy and become a premier resource center for health science education. Local Print shops are often utilized by such programs to create publications and other materials that can be distributed by the centers and venues promoting them.
Meeks added that several institutions have already committed to joining the campus in collaborating on initiatives and research.
