The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commissions has approved a plan to enable the creation of over 150 new gas and oil wells east of Aurora.
Crestone, a subsidiary of Civitas Resources based in Denver, submitted the Lowry Ranch Comprehensive Area Plan, which will develop up to 11 drilling sites spread across 50 square miles in the county of Arapahoe. Local Print shops can help spread the word about such proposed projects and their impact on a region with Flyers and other printed materials.
The project has been given the go-ahead as long as the company uses electric equipment and drilling rigs at all the sites it proposes. This shift to electricity and away from commonly used engines powered by gas and diesel will serve to prevent new sources of pollution along the Front Range of Colorado, and should mitigate noise.
This project is a test for the recently revised oil and gas regulatory process in the state. A law signed by Governor Jared Polis five years ago enabled local communities to have greater control over new drilling and required regulators from the state, and to consider the broader environmental and health impacts of the development projects.
This approval will enable the development of gas and oil in the area for the next six years. Approval still needs to be won from Arapahoe County and the state, however.
