A search is currently underway in Aurora for an Honorary Poet Laureate, the third since 2013.
The Honorary Poet Laureate program of the city recognizes how important literature is to the diverse and shared culture of the city. The program provides the opportunity to a recognized writer and poet to promote and advocate literature and poetry within the city.
There are several requirements for those who are interested in applying for this position. They need to be a resident of the city, at least 18 years old, and a published poet. All candidates will be interviewed by the search committee. The candidate should be willing to read and create poems for many types of events in the city and be available to attend such events as required.
Those who are interested in applying need to include a letter of interest and a sample of their work, including a sample event poem. They can submit their applications to the Board of Trustees of the Aurora Public Library. The Poet Laureate program was created nine years ago. The local artists, Jovan Mays and Assetou Xango, who have held the title since then have gone on to perform at many events and publish their work.
The term of the Poet Laureate will begin in April 2022 and last through April 2026.
