Volunteers are being sought by the Housing and Community Services Department of Aurora for the Point-in-Time (PIT) count for 2024.
This is an annual count of those people who are experiencing homelessness on any given day. It is part of efforts across the country to identify the extent of homelessness in the United States.
Volunteers will work with a team to cover a designated area and speak directly with those who are experiencing homelessness. They will have a survey that will help them to identify the needs of the people with whom they speak, and will also hand out resources to other members of the public.
Manager of homelessness programs for Aurora, Emma Knight, said that the PIT count report is one of several resources taken that help inform the decision-making process of the city on the services needed to benefit the most vulnerable populations. Knight added that this program also helps to raise awareness in the community about such services.
Poster printing can be used to garner such volunteers and the benefits of their efforts at such events.
The PIT count event in Aurora will take place on Tuesday, January 23 from 6:00am to noon. Those who are interested in volunteering should sign up online by Monday, January 15 and attend a virtual one-hour training session before the date of the event.
