West Sacramento to host proposal writing contest

The Center for Land-Based Learning in West Sacramento will be holding a competition for students in January.

Children interested in benefiting the environment can take part in the Caring for Our Watersheds proposal writing competition. The contest challenges students to look into environmental issues related to local watersheds and then create a realistic solution to the problem. Teams may have up to four participants, and the idea must be explained in approximately 1,000 words. The submissions also need visuals and are to be submitted on January 28.

The judges for the competition will select 10 proposals based on factors such as the submission’s comprehensive scope, impact on the environment, and use of budget. Teams who are chosen as finalists will need to give a five-minute verbal presentation on their proposal. Those who participate in the finals may win up to $1,000 for themselves and their school or club. Competitions for children similar to this can use poster printing to make ads for schools and libraries.

The finals for the proposal writing contest will be held on Saturday, April 23. Students who want to join the competition must be in grades 9-12 and live near the Sacramento and San Joaquin River Watersheds. All finalists will receive a community mentor to help with their presentation. Only one realistic solution can be pitched per proposal.
