Neo-soul trio splashes into West Sacramento area

The West Sacramento area is hosting the neo-soul band Moonchild this July.

The concert held at Harlow’s in Sacramento will be a stop as part of Moonchild’s Waves Tour, featuring a guest performance by Brittney Carter.

Based in Los Angeles, the band is comprised of Amber Navran, Andris Mattson and Max Bryk — all of whom are multi-instrumentalists.

Using smooth vocals, jazz-inspired interplay, and tight brass and woodwind arrangements, Moonchild has made a name for themselves in the alternative R&B scene.

Their latest and sixth LP, Waves, represents a culmination of the slowly building moment of the band over the course of 15 years.

Formed in 2011, the three bandmates initially got together as jazz students at the University of Southern California. Taking inspiration by the likes of D’Angelo, the band released their debut album in 2012, Be Free.

The main theme of Waves centers on the notion of riding the ebbs and flows that life takes you and trying to enjoy the ups and downs as they come. The album features guest appearances by artists such as Lalah Hathaway, PJ Morton, Jill Scott and Rapsody, among others.

Moonchild is joined by Brittney Carter, a rapper from Chicago, on their current tour.
