West Sacramento area celebrates Juneteenth with block party

Juneteenth is being celebrated in the West Sacramento area with an annual block party.

Happening at Sacramento’s historic 40 Acre Complex, the all-ages event will feature a number of musical acts, local eateries, and other activities.

The Juneteenth Block Party is more than just a festival, however, since it is a cultural event celebrating the day that the last enslaved Black Americans got word of their freedom in 1865, more than two years after the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The event includes a Black-owned business marketplace, cultural festivities such as spoken word and dance performances, a kids space full of games and interactive elements located at Esther’s Park thanks to the organizing of St. HOPE Public Schools and even a car showcase featuring local car club The Stylistics.

Musical acts at the event include Digital Underground, the hip-hop supergroup that once included the rapper Tupac in its ranks in the early 1990s. Other acts include Sol Development and Lucky Witherspoon.

In addition to local food trucks and vendors offering a variety of Black cuisine, there’s also a beer and wine garden for the 21+ crowd.

Cultural events like this may choose to use poster printing to help spread the word in the community.

This year’s Juneteenth Block Party is happening on June 14 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the 40 Acres Complex in Sacramento on 35th Street.
