Restaurant group buys closed restaurant for commissary kitchen

The Cohn Restaurant Group, which operates 22 restaurants in San Diego County, recently purchased the closed Junk House restaurant to serve as its commissary kitchen.

The building, which is north of San Diego State on Adobe Falls Road, offers 5,500 square feet of space.

The co-owner of the group, David Cohn, said the main point of buying the restaurant was to acquire a kitchen large enough to prep food for the various restaurants, and to support a catering operation. However, part of the building will be used as a small restaurant.

Cohn added that the group has been looking in more heavily industrialized areas for its commissary, but the restaurant it found is brand new, large, and centrally located, close to I-8 and other freeways in the area. In addition, the Junk House owners remodeled their restaurant completely.

Cohn said the newer kitchen in the restaurant will be helpful during times of the year when their business picks up, particularly those eateries in Balboa Park and along the coast. He also revealed that his group will talk to people in the community to find out what sort of small restaurant they would like to see in the building on Adobe Falls Road. They have time to conduct the research, since it will take several months to acquire a liquor license.
