One of the giants of popular music is on the way to San Diego.
Paul Simon is on his A Quiet Celebration Tour and will be stopping in America’s Finest City. He has enjoyed a successful solo career as well as being part of the celebrated duo, Simon & Garfunkel, whose music was a hallmark of the 1960s.
The two met in 1953 and in 1964 auditioned for Columbia Records, which released their debut album “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” that year. The album was not successful, but one track, “The Sound of Silence,” was requested repeatedly by people who heard it on the radio. The success of the song led to further collaboration, and their 1970 album, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” is one of the best-selling ever.
The duo called it quits in 1970, and Simon went solo. He has explored music genres including reggae, soul, and world music. After hearing a Tape of South African street music Simon went to Johannesburg to record with African musicians including Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The album that resulted from this experience, “Graceland,” won a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1988. He has a total of 16 Grammys, including two others for Album of the Year: 1976’s “Still Crazy After All These Years,” and “Bridge Over troubled Water” (1971).
