The City of San Diego is planning to celebrate the nation’s birthday in a big way.
The Big Bay Boom fireworks show has had a significant economic impact on San Diego. In 2024, non-local attendees brought in approximately $100m, which most benefited retail shops, restaurants, and motels, and hotels, who stand to profit again this year.
The fireworks are set off by professionals stationed on four barges anchored in different locations in San Diego Bay – Harbor Island, Shelter Island, and the North and South Embarcadero. As might be expected, the best places to watch the show are near the four barges, as well as the Marina District, at the Coronado Ferry Landing, or from a watercraft.
There are special events planned in connection with the show. These include watching the fireworks from the deck of the USS Midway, which is now a museum, or having dinner aboard the Berkeley at the San Diego Maritime Musuem, and then watching the show from the water aboard one of the museum’s ships.
The San Diego Symphony Orchestra will give a concert at the Rady Shell in Jacobs Park, featuring music that celebrates the nation, such as the iconic “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
