An upcoming concert in San Diego will delight hip-hop fans.
An experimental hip-hop trio comprising Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes, collectively known as “clipping” (no capital letter) will perform soon in San Diego. They first attracted attention with “Midcity,” their debut mixtape, and followed that with their debut studio album, “CLPPNG.”
They released a major work, “Splendor & Misery,” a concept album with a science-fiction theme. The effort brought acclaim from critics the world over and got the band a nomination for a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, the second time in history a music album received a nod for the Hugo.
The next project, a sci-fi effort, a single titled “The Deep,” brought then another nomination for the Hugo Award, and had an influence on a novel of the same name, published by Simon & Schuster. After that, they pivoted away from science fiction toward horror, releasing concept albums “There Existed an Addiction to Blood” and “Visions of Bodies Being Burned.”
Appearing with clipping is Open Mike Eagle, a comedian, record producer, and rapper from Chicago now located in Los Angeles. He is a member of Project Blowed, a hip-hop collective, and sometimes refers to his style as “art rap.” He cites They Might Be Giants as an influence.
The concert is set for February 13 at the Jewel Box. Posters, which organizers can find at Print shops, are the traditional method of advertising performances like this.
