A multi-award-winning guitarist who has influenced generations of artists is coming to San Diego.

Buddy Guy was born in Louisiana but is recognized as a proponent of the Chicago Blues. Superstar guitarists including Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton have named him as a major influence.

Buddy Guy began playing guitar in the mid-1950s in Baton Rouge, but his career truly began in Chicago in the 1960s, when he worked at Chess Records as a session guitarist, backing artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and others. Up to 1967, Guy worked as a tow truck driver while he gigged at night, and he only recorded one album with Chess.

His career reignited when the blues became popular again in the 1980s and 1990s, and particularly when Eric Clapton asked him to join the “24 Nights” blues guitar event at the Royal Albert Hall. Silvertone Records released his breakthrough album “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues” (1997), which brought him into the mainstream.

Among his many awards, Guy has won nine Grammys, the Kennedy Center Honors, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2023, Rolling Stone placed him at No. 27 in its list of all-time greatest guitarists. He released his most recent album, “Ain’t Done with the Blues,” last year.

Now 90 years old, Buddy Guy will be at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on September 11. Organizers of events like this can use poster printing to promote them.
