Martha Graham dancers coming to San Diego

After being missed for almost 30 years, Martha Graham dancers are returning to San Diego.

The Martha Graham Dance Company appears courtesy of the La Jolla Music Society, bringing the:

“most skilled and powerful dancers you can ever hope to see” (Washington Post)

Martha Graham founded her company in 1926, and became a leader worldwide in contemporary dance. She experimented with the way humans move, starting with the basics of contraction and subsequent release. She founded her technique on these movements, and built an entirely new way of dancing on these principles, expressing emotion through direct, jagged, angular, sharp movements, something new in dance at the time.

Martha Graham was inspired by diverse sources including Greek mythology, Native American ceremonies, and modern art. Her most noted roles portray women of importance throughout history, including Joan of Arc, Medea, and Clytemnestra.

Included in this program is an original piece by choreographer Pam Tanowitz. The New York Times said of Tanowitz's works, that they are:

“the greatest creation of dance theater so far this century.”

The Martha Graham Dance Company will be at the San Diego Civic Center for one performance, from 8.00 pm until 10.00 pm on January 22. The Civic Center is in downtown San Diego, at 1100 Third Avenue at B Street. Banner printing is often used to advertise events like this.
