What's Happening in San Clemente, CA…

Funds allocated for coastal rail maintenance

A substantial portion of the projected $300 million needed for improvements to protect the coastal rails from approaching waves has been provided by the state of California, which has given the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) $125 million to assist protect a vital rail line near San Clemente.

There is an extra $38 million that is marked for track conservation initiatives within the San Diego region. The awarding of the grants was made known by The California State Transportation Agency on 24th October at San Clemente State Beach, located at a site where the rail line was recently closed in 2021 and last year due to a landslide and coastal erosion.

This money is part of a larger $1.3 billion investment in transportation improvements across California, said the state’s transportation secretary, Toks Omishakin. He highlighted how this investment would have an impact on neighboring communities. To stabilize four portions of the fragile 7-mile segment, Omishakin announced that $20 million will be expended on stabilizing the coast over the next 25-30 years. Poster printing can be used to make signage for work sites.

Omishakin went on to say:

“It’s not very often that you get a chance to work on programs, policies and projects where you see the direct impact that it’s going to have on people in the communities that we’re serving.”

The financing, which will also be used on the LOSSAN Corridor, a crucial route utilized by trains, was hailed by San Clemente City Council member Rick Loeffler.
