Comedic play set for San Clemente

San Clemente’s Cabrillo Playhouse is putting on a production of the comedic play Home, I’m Darling this spring.

Director Tamara Harvey helmed the original London production in 2019 from playwright Laura Wade, with its inaugural cast including Katherine Parkinson, Sara Gregory and Richard Harrington.

Home, I’m Darling centers on a modern woman, Judy, giving up her corporate finance job to become a 1950s-style housewife, giving her spouse the red carpet treatment every time he comes home from work. At first, her real estate agent husband, Johnny, relishes the spotless home and hot dinners greeting him each evening. However, the couple begins to question if this is truly the heavenly arrangement it appears to be, not least of all because of the input of Johnny’s female boss.

Along the way, gender stereotypes, the idea of independence and what it means to be truly fulfilled in life are all dissected in this satirical send-up of retro idealism. The play features a soundtrack with a nod to the oldies, such as “Mr. Sandman,” and largely takes place in a dollhouse-like set with cutaway walls.

Home, I’m Darling is playing from May 22 to June 14 at the Cabrillo Playhouse at 202 Avenida Cabrillo in San Clemente.
