Book club to discuss sci-fi classic in San Clemente

The San Clemente library will host the Sci Fi Book Group’s discussion of the H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau this July.

The novel, an early work from the same author as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds, centers on a shipwrecked man who encounters a strange island in the Pacific run by Dr. Moreau, who conducts horrifying experiments involving both people and animals.

The story has had three different film adaptations, one in 1932, one in 1977 and one in 1996. The 1932 film was retitled The Island of Lost Souls and stars Dracula actor Bela Lugosi. The 1977 version, which keeps the original title, is a well-received and faithful adaptation. The 1996 version, also called The Island of Dr. Moreau, co-stars Marlon Brando as the titular mad scientist and had a mixed reception, though the creature effects by Stan Winston were praised.

The San Clemente Library, where this in-person book club meeting takes place, is located just a few blocks away from several local attractions, including the San Clemente Pier.

Book clubs like this may choose to use brochure printing to create season schedules and discussion guides.

The Sci Fi Book Group’s meeting for The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells is happening on July 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the San Clemente branch of the Orange County Library System at 242 Avenida Del Mar in San Clemente.
