San Clemente hosts sci-fi book group

The Sci Fi Book Group is meeting this January at the Orange County Public Library San Clement Branch.

January’s book will be All Systems Red by Martha Wells, which may be available to check out at the library’s front desk.

All Systems Red centers on a corporate-created android on a mission to accompany a spaceship of humans to explore planets. As a creation of the Company, the same employers of the human crew, the SecUnit android becomes self-aware after hacking its own interface. As a result, it secretly refers to itself as Murderbot while trying to pursue the goal of understanding its own existence through solitude.

As the first book in The Murderbot Diaries series, the novel and its follow-up entries served as the inspiration for the Apple TV+ series Murderbot, which currently holds a 95% critical score on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes after debuting in 2025. The series stars Alexander Skarsgard as the half-human, half-robot protagonist.

The mission to study a distant planet goes awry after Murderbot and the team of scientists must respond to another exploratory team nearby that has gone dark.
