Beach restoration project completed
San Clemente recently completed a broad sand restoration project at North Beach with the aim to expand part of the coastline that was eroded.
Starting in late July, 30,000 cubic meters of sand had to be relocated from the Santa Ana River as part of an effort that went on for several months.
The $2m sand replacement program progressed faster than anticipated, enabling a 7,000 cubic-yard increase in the amount of sand being hauled. The City’s planned beach restoration initiative, which involves adding more sea sand, has now been accepted by the California Coastal Commission after a review. Letterheads tend to feature on documents from governing bodies like this.
In line with this approach, four different sites have been designated for restoration. A total of about 300,000 cubic yards of sand per year will be added to sites such as T Street Beach.
A similar project started earlier this year had to overcome a number of early obstacles, including the transfer of dredge sites. By the time the plan was paused in the spring, approximately 114,000 cubic yards had been moved out of the required 251,000.
The aim of the sand replenishment project is to build a beach berm measuring 50 feet from Linda Lane up to T Street. The Manson Construction dredger is due for a return trip in October to deliver the last 86,000 cubic yards.
