The California Theatre of Performing Arts will be presenting its third concert of its 2016-2017 Concert Series in February. The concert will be called “Symphonic Surprise.”
The program for the evening will be three pieces – a violin concerto, a symphony and a suite.
The Violin concerto will be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Violin Concerto NO. 3 in G Major. Soloist will be Usha Kapoor. This concerto was penned by Mozart when he was only 19 and is one of his most popular pieces.
Franz Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G Major will also be performed. This work is also known as the “Surprise Symphony” as it is known for its many jokes. The most distinctive feature of the symphony is the addition of a loud chord in the midst of a soothing second movement. Haydn added the extreme fortissimo for the premiere of the piece in London on an impulse in order to jar a snoring patron in the front row. The other surprising feature is the structure of the four-movement symphony which Haydn himself initiated.
Igor Stravinsky’s Puccinella Suite will round out the evening’s entertainment. The suite was originally part of the ballet Pulcinella, and Stravinsky revised Pergolesi’s original music into a much shorter 25-minute version.
Patrons will want to mark their Calendars for the performance Saturday, February 11th, 2017 at the California Theatre of Performing Arts, 562 W. 4th St. San Bernardino. The program will start at 7:30 pm.
