Medical practitioners will have a chance to learn new skills at a workshop in Orange.
The Neonatal PICC Insertion Workshop is designed to provide clinicians with formal instruction and hands-on experience related to the insertion, use, care, and maintenance of extended dwell peripheral catheters in neonatal patients. The workshop combines classroom-based learning with practical application to support standardized and safe clinical practice.
The course is intended to fulfill both the didactic and practical requirements associated with neonatal peripherally inserted central catheter placement. Content includes an overview of central and midline PICCs, with attention given to terminology, indications, and clinical use. Participants review the types of fluids appropriate for administration through central and midline catheters.
Anatomical instruction is included to support accurate catheter placement. The workshop covers identification of veins in the upper and lower extremities and the scalp that are suitable for PICC insertion in neonates. Device selection is addressed in relation to patient condition, therapy requirements, and duration of use. Infection prevention is a central component of the curriculum.
The practical portion of the workshop requires participants to bring their own introducer, PICC, and insertion tray for skills practice. Guidance is available for those who encounter difficulty obtaining the required materials. Printing services can be used to put together important lists.
The Neonatal PICC Insertion Workshop, organized by the Department of Nursing Quality, Research, and Education, is scheduled to take place on February 3rd at the UC Irvine Health Building 56 Room 113 in Orange.
