Orange’s Musco Center for the Arts is hosting a concert by the Blind Boys of Alabama this September.
With a legacy spanning more than 80 years featuring a rotating lineup of performers, the Blind Boys of Alabama are the torch-bearers for roots gospel and hold the title of the longest-running music group in the United States.
Over their career, the group that started in 1939 at an Alabama school for deaf and blind African Americans has scooped up six Grammy Awards, collaborated with artists such as Lou Reed, Willie Nelson, and Ben Harper, and been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association in 2024.
That same year, the Blind Boys of Alabama released a book, the “Spirit of the Century,” chronicling the rise and enduring relevance of the band, featuring interviews with the bandmates and other insiders.
The band is known for reinterpreting classic gospel standards, but also for reimagining the works of contemporary rock and pop musicians – such as Prince, Eric Clapton, and Tom Waits, into gospel songs.

The Blind Boys of Alabama are performing on September 9 at 7:30 pm at the Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University at 377 N Cypress St. in Orange.
