Winners announced in Los Alamitos speech contest

Around 24 students in fourth grade and fifth grade at Los Alamitos Elementary School in Los Alamitos, California recently engaged in the Los Alamitos Elementary School yearly speech contest.

Some of the topics that were discussed at the speech contest include the reasons that children should have cellphones, and what lessons can be learned from our knowledge of how the brain functions.

The 24 contestants were judged by Karen Russell (a member of the school board), Richard Murphy (a council member), Elvia Galicia (the Los Alamitos District Director of Fiscal Services), Meg Cutuli (the school board president), and the Los Alamitos Director of Safety and Student Services.

First place was given to Nathan Spolter, who discussed the positive aspects of YouTube. Second place went to Benji Gamarnik, for his discussion of cruises, and Hala Essayli’s speech on the importance of self-esteem came third.

One of the judges at the competition said:

"It was extremely difficult to narrow the field down to the top three winners due to the high quality of the speeches.”
