Los Alamitos is celebrating Earth Day with a meet-and-greet event featuring public awareness icon Smokey Bear himself at the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor Library this April.
Featuring activities, fact-gathering, and a talk about the history of Smokey Bear, the program is being co-presented by educator Ms. Savannah.
The book What Is the Story of Smokey Bear? by Steve Korté will also be explored for this all-ages event promoting environmental conservation.
Smokey Bear first appeared in 1944 as a creation of the U.S. Forest Service. At the time, forest fires were being weaponized as an attack tactic during World War II. Smokey has continued to promote fire safety in the wilderness for over eight decades.
With his trademark slogan, “Only you can prevent wildfires,” Smokey helps raise awareness of the fact that the vast majority of wildfires are caused by people and are preventable.
Smokey’s message represents the longest-running public service announcement campaign in American history. The leading man-made cause of wildfires has changed slightly over the years, with cars and campfires taking the top slot away from cigarettes and stray matches. However, Smokey’s warning about fire safety remains relevant to this day.
Educational events like this may choose to use brochure printing to create student activities and historical pamphlets.
Meet and Greet: Smokey Bear is happening on Tuesday, April 28 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor Library at 12700 Montecito Rd in Seal Beach.
