The only musician in her family, Jessy J began playing the piano at age four.
After starting the saxophone at age nine, the artist encourages young musicians to experiment with different instruments until they find a sound they like.
As a child, Jessy J took private tutoring at home, in addition to band class at school, for both piano and sax. Her first tutor for sax even toured with Sammy Davis Jr., sparking her curiosity about different musical genres, including jazz.
Her aspirations to go pro were cemented when Jessy’s mother bought her a Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone when she was 15, an instrument she still uses to this day, on the recommendation of the tutor.
Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, and other famous jazz artists became influential on Jessy J as she spread her wings as a musician.
