La Palma welcomes new councilmember

Recently, the La Palma City Council voted unanimously to appoint Kathy Flachmeier to the unfulfilled term of Steve Hwangbo, who resigned in 2017. Hwangbo's term runs through December 4, 2018 – the time frame that now applies to Flachmeier.

In order to find a replacement for Hwangbo, the City Clerk's Office, following directions from the City Council, coordinated a short period of time during which four applicants were found: Flachmeier, and Dr. Garrett Wada, Martha Lomeli, and Emanuel Aparicio. A special meeting of the council was held earlier at which all four were interviewed; members of the public were invited to attend and Flachmeier was selected.

Flachmeier, who recently retired, has been a resident of La Palma since 1987. She attended California State University in Long Beach, which awarded her both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Public Administration. She worked in construction for 18 years before she went to work for her old university, where she was a project manager, an assistant construction manager, and finally a project engineer.

She will take the oath at a regular meeting of the City Council on January 16, 2018. The public is invited to attend both the swearing-in ceremony, and a short reception that follows.
