The City of La Palma has been holding a Memorial Day Ceremony for more than 30 years, and it has become one of the community's most cherished traditions. This year’s event is coming up fast.
The city's celebration honors the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who have served in the United States military. There are several different components to the day.
The kick off takes place in the morning, after which there is a musical interlude, and then the ceremony takes place.
There is also an art, poetry, and essay contest for high school and junior high school students. The entrants must either live in La Palma, or attend a school within the city. They are invited to submit a poem, an essay, or a piece of art inspired by the theme of the day. All the entries will be displayed during the ceremony, and the student who creates the winning poem or essay will be asked to read their work aloud during the ceremony.
Finally, the city's Community Activities and Beautification Committee is encouraging members of the community to write letters to the troops. The letters, written in honor of Memorial Day, can be up to an 8½ x 11 sheet of paper, and given to the committee.
The festivities begin at 9:00 am on May 28 at the civic center. An event like this could be enhanced if organizers work with a banner printing company to create appropriate pieces to decorate the venue.
