Later this October in Irvine, a graphic-led showcase will debut to explore the evolution of style trends, created by writer, creative director, and Los Angeles-based illustrator, Nicole Updegraff.
"Iconic" is a visual arts tribute to the Revolution of Fashion. Paying tribute to 100 Black designers, stylists, and style trailblazers, this narrative and visual exhibition blends fine art, fashion history and Black cultural legacy. Designed for viewers of all ages, the project is designed as a fusion of art gallery, interactive museum experience and cultural anthology.
Ranging from literature artwork to live event activations and creative initiatives, Updegraff's work has taken her to various corners of the world, from the U.S., Europe, Japan and West Africa. To display artwork to the community, graphic design serves as a crucial tool in illustration-led exhibitions.
Alongside the Center for Storytelling, Global Languages and Cultures, and various university partners, the residency at UC Irvine will be presented by the Illuminations Arts & Culture program. A masterclass for undergraduate students who share a love of creativity follows on October 28.
Using the university's ZotSpot platform to secure a spot, guests can sign up for free. The School of Humanities will host drop-in visits for ICONIC from 2 pm to 6 pm on Monday and Tuesday, October 26 and 27. Humanities Gateway 1030 is the location for Updegraff's gallery presentation, scheduled for 6 pm on October 27 at UC Irvine.
