What's Happening in Irvine, CA…

Some of the biggest children’s adventure movies in recent memory are screening at Hicks Canyon Community Park in Irvine this summer.

Next month is packed with two films that were not only enormous blockbusters in 2025, but they both center on a child main character who gets transported to a legendary, magical land.

It is all part of the City of Irvine’s free Movies on the Lawn series, a subcategory of the larger Summer in the City slate of activities, which also includes rock shows, classical concerts, and dances.

On July 17, A Minecraft Movie will screen at the park. It centers on a ragtag group of heroes who get pulled into a mysterious cubic world. The adventurers include two siblings, Sebastian Hansen’s Henry and Emma Myers’ Natalie, who must go from unassuming middle school-age students to heroes tasked with saving another dimension from destruction.

Then, on July 24, the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon will screen. Mason Thames’ Hiccup is a child who is part of a Viking clan in a magical world. However, the Vikings are under threat from dragons who attack their village on the Isle of Berk. After Hiccup befriends one of the dragons, called Toothless, the dragons and Vikings work together to face a common threat.

Movie screenings like this may choose to use poster printing for low-cost promotion in the community.
