The Irvine area is getting a taste of the golden age of Hollywood when the 1935 classic Mutiny On The Bounty screens at the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library this November.
Inspired by the real-life mutiny of the HMS Bounty in 1789, the film stars Clark Gable’s Fletcher Christian, with the actor going without his signature mustache for the role. Charles Laughton’s Captain Bligh is the tyrannical force that Fletcher must overcome. Laughton even commissioned The London Company to create an exact replica of the uniform that the historical figure wore.
The HMS Bounty was also recreated as a replica for the movie, on a set located on Catalina Island. The film was also shot in Tahiti in the South Pacific.
With a budget of $2m, Mutiny on the Bounty was the most expensive film MGM ever produced in its day, with the production taking two years to complete.
The film ultimately earned Gable his second Academy Award nomination, after winning the year before thanks to It Happened One Night.
A brief talk about the movie and its history by the “Movie Guy” Theo Siegel will precede the screening. Film showings like this may use brochure printing for audience programs, schedules of upcoming films, or informational pamphlets for educational purposes.
