Ribbon Cutting held for renovated Grove Park

Grove Park improvements have been completed and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on December 2.

Following an 11:30 am cutting, light refreshments were accompanied by music and the inaugural games where played on the repaired tennis and basketball courts. Breaking in the new courts were the Berkeley National Junior Tennis League and the Longfellow Middle School Girls basketball team.

A main purpose of the renovations was to make the park and its facilities more accessible for all residents, including the elderly and people with disabilities. Among the improvements involved in accomplishing this were renovations to restrooms, and changes made to gates, doors, and bleachers.

Other improvements to the park included two new basketball courts to replace those encroached upon by tree roots, and a half-court with an eight-foot hoop. New backboards, hoops, and poles are part of the new basketball full courts as well.

Three tennis courts with new nets and standards to support them were built to replace the old cracked courts that had been lifted to the point of being irreparable.

A new textured surface made of pigmented acrylic provides a more enjoyable playing experience, as well as being more durable. New lighting will make nighttime playing easier.

Grove Park makes the 13th project completed by the Berkeley park system in the last 14 months. Creating new Brochures reflecting the newly renovated park could serve as the city's most effective promotional tool.
