The Center Street garage in Berkeley is closing on June 30th to make way for a new energy efficient parking garage slated to open in the fall of 2017.
The new garage will have rooftop solar panels and
other energy efficient features such as LED lighting, rainwater collection and storage of water for irrigation.
The current location, which has entrances on Center and Addison Streets, is about 70 years old. The garage currently has enough parking for 420 vehicles. The new garage will have 720 parking spaces including 19 electric vehicle-charging stations. The new garage will also provide self-storage for approximately 300 bicycles. This will be the largest self-storage area for bicycles in the city.
The city is recommending alternative parking garages for residents and employees of local businesses to use while the new garage is being constructed. It is likely that Banners and large Posters will be set up directing people to the other locations including the Oxford Garage, the Berkeley Way parking lot, the Allston Garage, the Kittredge Garage and Promenade Garage.
The city is also trying to accommodate more parking for vehicles along Center and Addison streets by altering the striping along the area. The Downtown Berkeley Associating is assisting motorists by creating a map of available parking hours. The information will include the hours the garages are available and the fees they charge.
