What's Happening in Berkeley, CA…

Dance company headed to Berkeley

The Pilobolus modern dance company will be appearing in Berkeley this winter, featuring three shows on the theme of “re:CREATION.”

The event will bring together classic and modern dance pieces with an eye towards reinventing and reinterpreting the classics. The company developed the performance during a three-week residency at the Joyce Theatre in New York, and is currently on a nationwide tour, which will also include three other stops in California. The performance will feature live audio description headsets for blind and visually impaired audience members.

Marketing material advertises the show as:

“…a transformative odyssey of reinvention where audience and artists rediscover, redefine, and recreate timeless narratives through new visions of history, myth, and the innate human need for expression.”

The Berkeley stop will include two matinee performances, as well as a Saturday evening show. The repertoire performed varies from show to show, but titles of pieces include Behind the Shadows, On the Nature of Things, and Symbiosis, reflecting the theme of transformation. The company consists of nine dancers under the guidance of artistic directors Matt Kent and Reneé Jaworski. Dance performances like this often use evocative poster printing and social media images to help attract lovers of the arts.

Pilobolus’s re:CREATION tour will appear at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 on as part of the Cal Performances initiative.
