The Voice of Roma will organize a cultural festival in May at the Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center in Berkeley.
The Herdeljezi Roma Festival is an event where people can learn about Romani culture and enjoy authentic Romani performances. The multi-day experience will include a free dance workshop with Sani Rifati, a singing lesson with Carol Silverman, and an accordion class with Mateo Tweten. People can also attend a panel discussion at the festival that is led by Romani artists and a group dance party with performers like Rumen Shopov and Kali Orkestar.
The Voice of Roma is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1996 and incorporated in 1999. The mission of the group is to represent Romani culture in a way that combats stereotypes. The Voice of Roma also preserves the culture through hosting traditional events. The organization works to help improve the lives of Romani people with charitable projects and economic development programs. The current president of the group’s board of directors is Sani Rifati.
The cultural festival will be held on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th. Tickets to the performances on Friday will cost attendees $30, and the price will increase if people purchase their admission at the door.
