Tempe Improv is hosting a stand-up comedy show by Zainab Johnson this summer.
Johnson brings her unique perspective, having grown up in a Black Muslim family in Harlem. Before making a career pivot to comedy, Johnson was a teacher with a degree in math and education.
She quickly followed her call to perform stand-up comedy by making a splash at Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal as a “New Face of Comedy.” She has since returned as a veteran to the comedy festival in various shows.
A regular at Los Angeles’ Laugh Factory and New York City’s Comedy Cellar, Johnson has also made her foray into television with both comedy specials and in acting gigs.
Johnson plays a recurring character in the Greg Daniels-created sci-fi comedy series Upload, streaming on Prime Video. She is also one of the hosts of Netflix’s 100 Humans and stars as Dr. Hanniel in the web series Avant-Guardians.
After debuting on TV on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers, Johnson has since made the rounds on the traditional networks as well, including on the reality show competition Last Comic Standing and HBO’s All Def Comedy.
Stand-up comedy shows like this may choose to use flyer printing for low-cost promotion in the community.
Zainab Johnson is performing on June 26 at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm, June 27 at 6:30 pm and 9:00 pm, and on June 28 at 6:00 pm at Tempe Improv at 930 E University Dr.
