Spicy festival raises the heat in Chandler

The Great Southwest Cajun Festival is coming to Chandler.

Local foodies will have a chance to sample traditional Louisianan dishes while they enjoy handcrafted brews, take part in eating contests, and listen to live music. Phoenix has traditionally been home to the event, but it was moved because Chandler's space is larger, and the city has recently added a permanent stage in Chandler Park for entertainment events.

Among the food to be enjoyed will be crawfish boil, provided by the Angry Crab Shack, which is the restaurant sponsoring the event. This traditional New Orleans dish features boiled crawfish, vegetables, red potatoes, special seasoning, and lemon. Angry Crab will also serve charred oysters, shrimp, cornbread, and crawfish rolls.

Other goodies include po'boys (seafood baguettes) from Creole Cajun Bistro, jambalaya from HoneyBear's BBQ, and barbecued dishes from both JJ's Louisiana BBQ and Raging Cajun Smoking Barbecue.

San Tan Brewing Company and Abita Brewery will offer five or six beers each, and entertainment includes bands like Blues Hounds and Hourglass Cats. The headliner is Urban Renewal Project, which will close down the festival.

The Great Southwest Cajun Festival takes place this Saturday, April 23, at Chandler's Dr. A.J. Chandler Park from 12:00 noon to 9:00 pm.

Event organizers might create festive Banners to hang throughout the venue to add to the fun of this New Orleans-themed festival.
