When Chandler residents go to the polls this summer, they will have an opportunity to shape the future of their city when they vote on the changes to the city's General Plan.
After over a year of input from residents and a number of public meetings, the General Plan addresses such matters as what sort of projects should be pursued and where. In Chandler, this includes how the downtown area should be redeveloped, including whether or not it should continue developing mixed-use projects, and whether light rail should be established. The area around Chandler Airpark is used for light manufacturing and parks, and it is suggested that trend should continue. It is also suggested that the area around Loop 202, currently used for large corporations, should continue in that capacity.
Once the plan is approved, it is used when the city council hears a proposal for a new development, or thinks about changing the zoning for a specific area. The plan also helps guide the city when it decides which areas to leave open for green spaces, parks, and important transportation corridors.
Chandler residents will be able to vote on the General Plan on August 30. Although details are available now on the website, city officials might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, giving them the information.
