Raul Midón hails from New Mexico, where he was placed with inadequate eye protection in an incubator, leaving him blind. When he was four, he was attracted to the sound of drumming. He attended a school for the blind where he learned the guitar, continued his education at the Santa Fe Preparatory School, then went on to the University of Miami, where he was graduated in 1990 after studying jazz.
Raul Midón started his career as a vocalist, backing up such Latin stars as Jose Feliciano and Julio Iglesias. He also began writing and recording his own material, and in 2005 dropped his debut album, “State of Mind.” He won a Grammy nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for his 2017 effort, “Bad Ass and Blind,” a cheeky title that showcases his fighting spirit.
People Magazine called him “an eclectic adventurist,” noting he adds flamenco touches to his acoustic playing, as well as improvising on a mouth-horn. A review in the Huffington Post says:
“He plays with such freedom and joy that his hands smile.”
Raul Midón will return to the Hal Bogle Theatre in the Chandler Center for the Arts on June 19 at 7:00 pm. This is an online performance that will be shown via Zoom to ticketholders, who will have a chance to participate in a Q&A following the show.
