MPC Development recently bought five acres in downtown Chandler for $1.6m, and plans to build townhomes there.
Real estate broker Colliers International says the developer plans to construct 77 townhomes; fewer than the 92 structures proposed in earlier plans. The original plans fell through, leaving the lot vacant until MPC purchased it.
The lot is near the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Alma School Road, behind a retail/office complex anchored by Staples, Safeway, and Home Depot. The property's zoning marks it for multifamily use, meaning condos, apartments, or townhomes rather than single-family houses. In the last few years, there have been more multifamily houses built in Chandler than single-family homes, and it is the first time this has happened in 20 years.
The trend toward multifamily structures is common throughout the area. Other projects in Chandler include the Alta Steelyard Lofts, which will feature 301 units, including several penthouses. Also, the DC Heights project features as many as 250 apartments, and may include a 10-story high-rise residential building.
MPD Development and city officials might consider collaborating with brochure printers on a booklet for distribution to realtors, both in Chandler and across the country. The realtors could use the information to discuss the new projects with their clients. Those out-of-state might also discuss the benefits of relocating to the area.
