Chandler has begun work on the second phase of the improvements it's making to Arizona Avenue, which officials consider a ‘New Front Door’ to the downtown from the Santan Freeway.
Improvements include streetlights, bike lanes, a new stoplight at Fairview Street, raised medians, wider sidewalks, and new landscaping, to be made on the stretch of Arizona Avenue between Frye and Pecos Roads. The first phase of the project was finished in 2010, and the current work's anticipated completion date is October 2018.
Although Arizona Avenue will remain open to traffic, some restrictions will be necessary to keep drivers, pedestrians, and construction workers safe. Businesses will remain open, and customers will have access to them. Signs will be placed to direct traffic, and to show people how to access the business they wish to visit.
The city's downtown redevelopment manager, Kim Moyers, says officials are doing everything they can to keep disruption in the area to a minimum during construction, adding they want everyone to know they are still welcome to come downtown while the project is ongoing.
Banicki Construction, a Phoenix company, is the contractor, and plans to do the work in stages. It will start on the west side, move to the east, then work on the center median.
In order to minimize confusion that can occur with projects like this, city officials could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents, outlining the work.
