Adaptive environmental exploration in Winnipeg
The Explore-Abilities program will host a sensory-friendly museum event for autistic children in Winnipeg.
In collaboration with the Autism Learning Centre, Autism Manitoba, and On The Spectrum Therapy Services, the Children’s Museum aims to create a welcoming environment for children with sensory sensitivities such as autism spectrum or sensory processing disorders.
During the Explore-Abilities Evening, which is part of the wider Explore-Abilities access program, the museum will adapt its exhibits by reducing lighting, lowering sound levels, and limiting visitor numbers to ease sensory stress. Select areas will include quiet zones designed to help children decompress and self-regulate when environmental stimulation becomes overwhelming.
The museum’s Explore-Abilities creator designed the access program to give children the opportunity to have fun while learning in a safe and accessible environment. Organizers have also planned additional accessibility features, including the use of visual safety signs, two-way communication devices, sunglasses, noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, and braille brochures. Staff trained in sensory support will be available to assist families and ensure every visitor can explore the museum’s exhibits comfortably.
Local printing services often assist community organizations by producing brochures that share event details, accessibility information, and educational content with visitors.
The Explore-Abilities sensory-friendly event will take place at the Children’s Museum, 45 Forks Market Road, Winnipeg, on Monday, December 22, 2025, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
