Parents decide on electives for students

Class electives are up for a vote in Menomonee Falls.

A survey by the school board, running from the

end of February through March 10, asked parents what they would like their children to take. Menomonee Falls' schools have to focus on math, science, and reading classes, but they also want to give students and parents a chance to pick classes that focus on important skills like those needed to get a job.

The 651 parents surveyed were to number their choices from first to seventh of class electives for elementary school children. Common electives such as art, music, and physical education were at the top of the list. Foreign languages, social skills, and web browsing were nearer bottom.

As for at the secondary level, students had nine careers to number in order of preference. Popular choices included business-related careers like marketing and finance along with computer systems and healthcare. The least popular careers were those in hospitality. When asked if students should have to take classes online, the responses were within a percentage of each other.

If students take business classes, one way to teach them about business stationery and business card design is by having a representative of a printing company come in and show them samples, with digital business cards bringing a modern touch to a traditional business tool.
