Menomonee Falls student lives the dream
Menomonee Falls High School lineman Matt Henningsen will be joining the University of Wisconsin Badgers for the 2017 football season, fulfilling a lifelong ambition for the recent graduate.
It has been Henningsen's dream to play for the Badgers, as he has followed the team since the age of five. UW is a family tradition as both of his parents, and three of his brothers went to the university as well. According to him, attending games was a reoccurring event that he enjoyed with his family.
He also visited the campus, which he says feels like home to him, twice last month; once at the beginning and another at the end. Neither were official visits, but on June 4, he participated in a camp on campus. Afterwards, the university reached out to him with the walk-on position.
Several other colleges including Western Illinois, Northern Illinois, Illinois State, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Buffalo offered him enticing Division-I scholarships, but he chose to commit to the walk-on spot for the Badgers. His position on the team will be defensive tackle to start his college football career.
Since the family is closely tied to the University of Wisconsin, having holiday cards made with a UW theme is an option. Henningsen could wear his uniform and the rest of the family could wear jerseys or other official UW merchandise.
