"Buddy bench" installed at Shady Lane

Students at Shady Lane Elementary in Menomonee Falls now have a "buddy bench" outside to use during recess. It was donated by a family and is next to the playground on the northeast end.

A buddy bench is where students can talk to each other during recess. Students can also sit on the bench if feel like they do not have a friend and other students will come and talk to them.

Buddy benches are often used in elementary schools to help students socialize and make friends. According to Brad Hoffman, Principal at Shady Lane Elementary, the buddy bench will help create more relationships between students. They can talk and find common ground without judgment or teasing.

The school wants to include every student in the learning and recreational environment, and make sure they feel welcome. Hoffman added that it was the staff's job to make sure students are not left out.

The Schneider family, from which Chris is in fifth grade at the school, donated the bench in remembrance of Chris' grandfather, who was a school bus driver. Several of Chris’s family members went to Shady Lane Elementary, including his four older brothers and sister, uncle, aunt, and father.

The buddy bench could be one of the photos on the school's calendars or posters in the hallway, perhaps showing two students with one arm around each other and smiling.
