Yakima trolleys to Selah back in service

A trolley system has restored service to Selah, having not run for the past two years.

Yakima Valley Trolleys (YVT) operates interurban electric railroad cars over the tracks of the former Yakima Valley Transportation Company. The cars are all-original and authentic, and date from the turn of the 20th century. Riding on them gives passengers a look at what life was like 100 years ago.

In order to put the Selah line trolleys back in service, YVT volunteers had to clear a number of rock slides from the tracks. They also had to repair those sections of the line the slides had damaged, as well as clearing out dead vegetation along the route.

The trolleys to Selah get their power from an overhead wire, but this was stolen. The new wire will be connected to an alarm that will alert the police in case of tampering. Since the wire is not yet installed, a generator car will provide the power the trolley needs to make the Selah run.

Selah is nine miles from Yakima, giving riders enough time to appreciate the experience of riding a streetcar. The system operates on weekends and holidays, and the trips to Selah run at 10:00 am, 12:00 noon, and 2:00 pm. They leave from the trolley barn at Pine Street and South Third Avenue.

Enterprises like this can benefit if operators create Brochures to describe the equipment, as well as the schedule and fares.
